Obitatury of Rachel Smead from the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette 11 May 1888:
An Old Resident of Allen County Finds Rest With Her Maker
Last night, at the residence of her son, John Smead, the well known expressman, Mrs. Rachel Smead, an old lady of 70 years, passed out of this mortal existence to a peaceful eternal one in the other world. The deceased came to her death by dropsy.
Much could be said of the life of this departed soul. She was benevolent within her means, affectionate as a mother could be, and at all times kindly to her friends and neighbors. She was, with the probably exception of Mrs. Isaac Busch, now living in St. Joseph township, within 5 miles of the city, the first white woman in Allen county, having come when 8 years old. She was the mother of L. Smead, of Ligget Bros'. stables, and John Smead, the expressman, and the wife of John M. Smead, the Washington Township farmer. The lady was brought here to be within easy reach of medical attendance. The funeral announcement hearafter
