Man Fatally Injured When Struck By Car

Edward W Ferry Victim of H. 13 Auto Accident

Town of Saratoga Man Dies in Hospital Several Hours after Receiving Injuries; Sixth County
Fatlaity.

Edward W. Ferry, 59, town of Saratoga, was fatally injured at 7:50 p. m. , yesterday when he stepped into the path of a heavy sedan on Highway 13 about seven miles south of Wisconsin Rapids. He died at Riverview hospital 2 hours and 15 minutes later.

Ferry, a WPA worker, was Wood county's sixth traffic victim of the year. His neck was broken, and he sustained a fractured skull, broken right leg and broken shoulder as major injuries, Coroner P. E. Wright said. The coroner said no inquest will be held.

Struck by Connecticut Car

Driver of the car that struck Ferry is John Dale Eunson, of Wilton, Conn., who was on his way east after a trip to Neillsville, his birthplace. In the car with Eunson were his wife and daughter, 4.

The accident was not reported to authoritities here until Ferry was brought to Riverview hospital.

Chief of Police R. S. Payne questioned witnesses and investigated the mishap. Eunson was not held after authorities conferred this morning. A headlight on Eunson's heavy sedan was broken by the impact.

Crossed Highway from Home

As authorities reconstructed the accident from witnesses' accounts, Ferry had crossed the highway from his home on the west side of it about a half mile south of the intersection of Highways 13 and 73 to aid Mrs. Vincent Kouba , town of New Rome, Adams county, who had stopped her car to repair a punctured tire.

Mrs. Kouba, with three children, was on her way to Wisconsin Rapids to visit her daughter, Helen,19, who is in Riverview hospital with injuries suffered in a car accident near Rudolph last Sunday.

Shortly afterwards, Mrs. Kouba's brother, Ernest Marth, New Rome trucker, arrived. He was onhis way home from Nekoosa.

Stepped into Traffic Lane

Marth pulled into the driveway of the Ferry home, turned about and drove back, parking his truck behind the Kouba car. Both vehicles were headed north. Ferry, according to Marth, had brought an inner tube with him to sell to Mrs. Kouba. She did not purchase it, however, and Marth prepared to take her and her children to Wisconsin Rapids. Ferry walked southward on the shoulder of the highway, rounded the end of the truck and stepped into the south-bound lane of travel to be struck by Eunson's car. Marth said Eunson had no chance to avoid striking the man.

Brought to Hospital

The victim was brought to the hospital in a car driven by William H. Fox, Milwaukee, a brigadier of the Salvation Army in charge of the Wisconsin and Upper Michigan district of the organization, who had missed the turn southwest on Highway 73 and had gone a short distance on Highway 13. He
was headed back to the intersection.

The Fox car, coming north a short distance beyond the scene of the accident, may have momentarily attracted the attention of Ferry when he stepped from behind the Marth truck, witnesses said. With Fox were A. E. Chesman, C. W. Hall and E. W. Morgan, all of Chicago.
