Lois Lee Gill passed into heaven on April 7, 2014 in Concord, NH where she lived for the past 14 years. Previously, Lois Gill had been a long-time resident of River Edge, NJ from 1954 to 1981 and then Cotuit, MA where she lived from 1981 to 2000.
Lois was born on May 17, 1922 in Boston, MA as the second daughter to Neil Lowell Crocker and Hazel Wilds Crocker. She grew up in West Roxbury, MA and attended Wheelock College in Boston where she studied kindergarten education. Lois loved the humanities and had a lifelong passion for painting, piano and poetry, as well as her faith. As a young woman Lois prayed that she would meet a man with a strong Christian faith. These prayers were later answered when she met the Reverend Sumner Harley Gill as he interned at her church, and they married on June 8, 1941.
Sumner and Lois served Congregational pastorates in Raymond, NH; Tilton, NH and Worcester, MA before moving to the First Congregational Church of River Edge, NJ in 1954 where they served for 27 years. Lois' love for children remained constant throughout her life and led to various positions during her career as nursery school teacher, art teacher and music teacher. In 1973 Lois became the Director of Religious Education at the First Congregational Church of River Edge where she served alongside her husband Sumner until their retirement in 1981. She gained great satisfaction and enjoyment from serving as a senior high youth advisor and "Mrs. G" had a profound impact on her flock and left many a teen with a deeper understanding of their faith.
Lois was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sumner, and is survived by her three sons and their wives, Dr. Lowell and Robin Gill of Charlotte, NC; Dr. John and Ruth Gill of Gilford, NH; and David and Diane Gill of Wilmington, NC. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and hundreds of friends.
Lois's strong faith sustained her through life and she looked forward to joining her husband and parents in Heaven.
A memorial service will be held for family and friends at the Cotuit Federated Church, 40 School St, Cotuit, MA at 1pm on Friday, April 11, 2014 and will be immediately followed by a brief burial service at Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.
