He served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Navy. After the war, he attended Tri-State College in Angola, Ind., where he received a degree in mechanical engineering.
He married Jean Margaret Ruppert on Aug. 30, 1947. They had four daughters. During his life he lived and worked in LaPorte; Niles, Mich.; and Rockford, Ill. He was a lifetime member of SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers), an active member of Aldersgate Methodist Church in Rockford, Ill., for many years, and the Rock River Valley Electrical Association.
He was a loving and caring husband and father who was very active in family activities. He found great pleasure in camping, fishing and caring for his pets. One of his greatest passions was hockey.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; two infant daughters, Linda and Pamela; a sister, Velma Ruth Boesiger; and a brother, Gordon L. Hicks.
He is survived by two daughters, Donna (Bill) Sobie of Cedarburg, Wis., and Nancy K. Hicks of DeKalb, Ill.; two grandchildren, Sarah and Christopher Sobie; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation and funeral services were held at the Newhard Funeral Home in Westville. There was a brief graveside service at Union Mills Cemetery followed by a luncheon at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Union Mills.
