Enlisted in Company E, Massachusetts 36th Infantry Regiment on 27 Aug 1862. Promoted to Full Sergeant. Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 23 Jun 1864. Wounded at Jackson, MS (Vicksburg Campaign). Wounded at Cambell's Station, TN. Served 3 years. Mustered out on 08 June 1865 at Alexandria, VA.

After the war worked one year at the Mass. Shoe Factory. Moved to Champaign Co., IL in 1866. Married a distant cousin, daughter of Abel Harwood. Farmer in Newcomb twp 5 years. Secretary of the Champaign Loan and Banking Association. Member of the Grand Army of the Republic and belonged to the Military Order of Loyal Legion (History of Champaign Co.)

Died in North Brookfield, MA while visiting and is buried there. Listed on the Abel Harwood monument (his wife's father) in Bloomington, McLean Co., IL and space was made but not used for burial there for them.
