John Arthurs, another of the Smith county pioneers, died Wednesday of last week at the home of Mrs. Ella Jeffrey, at Norcatur, and his body was brought to this place and funeral services were held in the Christian church Saturday forenoon, Elder M. J. Hibbs delivering the sermon. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery. The deceased was born in 1830 in Pennsylvania and would have been 86 years of age the 29th of this month had her lived. He came to Illinois when a young man and was united in marriage with Miss Mary Lawrence in 1857. To their union were born six children, their names and addresses being as follows: James of Norcatur; Steven of Lapeer, Mich.; Mrs. W. A. Fisher of Parker; Frank of Eads, Colo; Mrs. Nettie Lanman of this city and Mrs. Ella Jeffrey, Norcatur. The family came to this county in 1886 and located on a farm a few miles north, living there about fifteen years. Mrs. Arthurs died in 1903, and after that the husband made his home most of the time with the youngest daughter, Mrs. Jeffrey.
