Originally chose his place of burial on a lofty peak in the "Big Horn Basin" Officially designated on the Government Maps as "Burkes Bluff, Wyoming". His mausoleum was to of consisted of huge boulders from the native marble, surrounded by eternal snow ref: NY Times 4 Mar 1902
Indian fighter and many years friend of Buffalo Bill [William F. Cody], Major John M. Burke has answered the last call and gone to join his former chief. Died at Providence Hospital. He returned to Washington about 6 months ago, and made his home at the residence of Mrs. Allison Nailor. He died a pauper and was buried in an unmarked grave in Mount Olivet Cemetery. On 12 Apr 2017, a permanent marker was erected.
