US Congressman. Born in Keene, Cheshire County, Hew Hampshire, he attended the Kimball Union Academy, graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, in 1843 and then from the Dartmouth College medical department in 1846. He practiced medicine in Barnet, Vermont, Plymouth, Massachusetts and Titusville, Pennsylvania, (1849-61). In 1861, he moved to Westfield, New York, where he engaged in banking, manufacturing, and agricultural pursuits. During the Civil War, he served as a Major military agent in the New York Union Volunteers. After the war, he served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1872, member of the New York State Assembly, (1873-74), plus Government director of the Union Pacific Railroad under Presidents Grant and Hayes, (1874-78). In 1883, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of medicine in Westfield, New York, until his death at age 71.
