U.S. Congressman. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he graduated from graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, in 1811 and served as a volunteer in the Washington Guards, during the War of 1812. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1817 and commenced to practice law in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Traveling to England, he wrote and published literary American works, (1827-30). In 1837, he was elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses, serving until his resignation in 1840. He then resumed the practice of law in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, until his death at age 51.
