Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Tuesday, May 12, 1931, pages 1&2:
James Berry Dale, Justice of the Peace of Edwardsville Township for slightly over a quarter of a century and engaged in the insurance and real estate business for years, died last night at 6:55 o'clock at his home 418 Center Street. Death was due to pleurisy and other complications which developed after a major surgical operation which he underwent at St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis four weeks ago.
He was recovering nicely from effects of the operation when he returned home from the hospital two weeks ago today. Within a few days he had an attack of pleurisy and it was followed with heart trouble. Since last Friday his condition had been considered critical and yesterday it was realized that he had only a short time to live.
Funeral services are being arranged for Thursday afternoon but details had not been completed today. A private service will be conducted at the family residence at 2 o'clock followed with public services at St. John's M.E. Church at 2:15 o'clock. Burial will be made at Woodlawn Cemetery, founded by his father, Judge M.G. Dale and several other residents of Edwardsville.
Mr. Dale was born in Edwardsville on July 6, 1853, shortly after his parents, Judge and Mrs. M.G. Dale came here from Vandalia to live. He was 77 years, 10 months and 5 days old. His father had been appointed as registar for the Government Land Office, a position he filled until its removal to Springfield.
He attended the Edwardsville public schools, graduating from the old Dale High School, an institution named for his father. Mr. Dale was one of the organizers of the Edwardsville High School Alumni Association.
Shortly after finishing school Mr. Dale went to Paola, Kan., where his brother, Dr. Ewing Dale, was a promising young physician. Plans had been made for Mr. Dale to operate a drug store but sudden death of Mr. Dale changed those arrangements.
Mr. Dale returned to Edwardsville. For a time he was in the office of Dr. Jos. Pogue. Later he engaged in the jewelry business and for a time he was connected with the late M. Roa in the furniture business. Mr. Dale was also connected with the Madison Store for a time and was postmaster of Edwardsville from 1883 to 1887.
In later years he became interested in the insurance and real estate business and carried it on in connection with his official office. He was precinct committeeman and former chairman of the Madison County Democratic Precinct Committee.
About three years ago his son, Douglas E. Dale, became affiliated with him in the insurance and real estate business.
On June 23, 1887, he was married to Miss Rebecca Lee Evans, member of another old Edwardsville family. For forty years they occupied the Center Street home, living in a community known for many years as Piety Hill.
The widow and son are the only surviving members of the immediate family. He was one of eight children, the seventh to die, and his only brother, is Lee Dale who lives at Atlanta, Ga.  The brother will arrive in Edwardsville tonight.
For years Mr. Dale was active in social affairs of this city. He was a member of the Edwardsville Dramatic Club which gave many local entertainments. He was a member of the old Edwardsville Company, Illinois State Militia and chairman of the local Military Entertainment Committee during the World War. The committee was one that helped provide entertainment for soldiers stationed at cantonments.
For years he had been a member of St. John's M.E. Church and served on the official board. He was member of Edwardsville Camp of Modern Woodmen, and clerk of the camp for many years.
