TERRE HAUTE — James B. Ferres passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born on Sept. 20, 1929, in Terre Haute, to Bruce and Freida (Derler) Ferres.

He married Mae Grindle on May 7, 1948. She survives.

Jim was a graduate of Wiley High School, Cleveland Institute of Electronics and also attended Indiana State University. Jim worked as a signal maintainer for Pennsylvania Railroad, which later became Penn Central, and was local chairman of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalman Jesse Clark 41. Jim was a founding member of the Sandcut Firehouse. He was a member of St. Benedict's. Jim became a Golden Gloves boxing champion in 1946. He was a Babe Ruth baseball coach. Jim was an avid sports enthusiast and was a fan of Notre Dame, the Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed carpentry.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife; their children, Jim L. Ferres and wife Jill of Terre Haute, Fritz Ferres and wife Susan of Terre Haute, Cathi Swander and husband Mark of Terre Haute, Stanley Ferres and wife Faye of Largo, Fla., and Tony Ferres of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Greg, Stephanie, Eric, Angie, Erin, Stanley J., Jarren, Brandeis and Christine; great-grandchildren, Evan, Marley, Sydney, Joshua, Delaney, Landrie, Olivia, Cassidy, Brady James, Jaci, Taylor, Austin, Brynn and Caden; a sister, Jeanne Kauffmann; a half-sister, Kathy Treme; and several nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sharon Garlo; and a stepfather, Leonard "Tubby" Kirchner.

Cremation has been scheduled. Roselawn Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
