Major League Baseball Player, Manager. From 1879 to 1882 he played for the National League’s Buffalo Bison, Worcester Ruby Legs and Cleveland Blues, but made a name for himself as a successful Major League Manager. He coached the Brooklyn Bridegrooms from 1888 to 1890 winning the American Association pennant in 1889 and the National League pennant in 1890. He managed the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1891 and the Louisville Colonels in 1896. During his managing career he gathered 327 wins against 248 losses. After being fired by Louisville, he returned to his native Massachusetts where in 1897, he was involved in a serious accident. While riding in a wagon, he was hit by an electric car. He was thrown from the wagon and received serious hip injuries that ended his baseball managing career and left him in poor physical condition. He died two years later.
