Found in The State 06 January 1939: Funeral services for Charles B. Pope, 61, of the 1400 block of Cherokee street, who died yesterday morning after suffering an apparent attack of acute indigestion, will be conducted at 3:30 this afternoon from the Dunbar Funeral home by the Rev. C. E. Peele, pastor of Main Street Methodist church. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery. Mr. Pope suffered the attack in a store on Main street, turning blue in the face and falling to the floor in front of the counter. Mr. Pope was taking to Frank Stein, an employe of the store, just before the attack and had complained of a pain in his stomach. He was rushed to the Columbia hospital in an ambulance and attendants reported that he was dead on arrival there. Whether death occurred in the store or ambulance was not known. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Pope; eight daughters, Mrs. F. L. Reames, Charlotte, N. C.; Mrs. Hazel Prather, Miss Elizabeth Pope, Mrs. C. B. Brazell, Miss Marie Pope, Miss Janie Pope, Miss Annie Pope and Miss Betty Pope, all of Columbia; four sons, Charles B. Pope, Jr., Tommy Pope, Walter Pope and Roy Pope, all of Columbia, and one half brother, T. C. Pope of Columbia. The death was investigated by Magistrate Ollie Medford.
