An alumnus of Tulane Law School and Ole Miss Law School, Alonzo H. Sturgeon entered the practice of law in Natchez, Mississippi in 1961 in the law firm of Netterville & Sturgeon. He attended undergraduate at the University of Southern Mississippi where he graduated with highest honors.

Sturgeon quickly entered the political arena, being elected to represent Wilkinson County in the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1963 and Chancery Clerk in Wilkinson County in 1967.

In 1979, Mr. Sturgeon was elected District Attorney of the 6th Circuit Court District, including the five counties of Southwest Mississippi, Adams (Natchez), Amite (Liberty), Franklin (Meadville), Jefferson (Fayette), and Wilkinson (Woodville). In this capacity he served until his retirement from state service in 1996.

During his long career he developed a well recognized expertise in Criminal Law, teaching criminal justice at the University of Southern Mississippi from 1963 through 1979. He had extensive experience in probate law, wills and estates and administrative interests. He also served as School Board Attorney for Wilkinson County and Youth Court Prosecutor.

Mr. Sturgeon was a native of Natchez and a 1949 graduate of the old Natchez High School. He served in the Korean War rising to the rank of First Lieutenant and later served in the Mississippi National Guard.

Mr. Sturgeon married to the Former Bettye Moore of Woodville in 1953. He was a member of the Corinth Church of Christ and a Mason, and the father of one son, Holmes Sturgeon, with whom he practiced law.
