Of Billerica, age 90, passed away on April 1, 2014 at home, surrounded by his loving family following a lengthy illness.
He was the beloved husband of the late Bertha W. (Schmitz, Simmons) Swift to whom he was married to for 44 years.
He was born in Readfield, Me., on October 25, 1923, a son of the late Maurice and Florence Swift.
Richard resided in North Billerica for the past 64 years.
He was a graduate of Cony High School, Augusta, Maine. A graduate from Becker Junior Business College in Worcester, Ma. A graduate of the Mass College of Pharmacy.
Richard was a Navy "Pharmacists Mate First Class" during World War II, he was stationed on and served on the following vessels, USNTS, Newport, R.I., USNH, Chelsea, Ma., USN ABPD, San Bruno, Calif. USNAV, Base Hospital, # 4, US Fleet Hospital # 107, US Fleet Hospital # 116 and US LSM # 440.
Richard received the following awards and medals, World War II Victory Metal, American Area Metal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Amphibious Insignia.
He was a member of Thomas Talbot Lodge of Freemasonry A.F. & A.M. A former member of the Billerica Lodge of Elks # 2071. A member of VFW Post # 8819, all of Billerica, Ma.
Prior to his retirement he worked at Rogers Pharmacy in Waltham, McCormacks Drugstore in Billerica, Swan Drugs in Tewksbury, and the Billerica Medical Center in North Billerica.
He is survived by his three sons, Steven D. Swift, David J. Swift and his wife, Patti, and Richard D. Swift Jr., all of North Billerica.
Eight grandchildren, Kristin, Christopher and his wife, Katie, Sara, Donny and his wife, Summer, Jeffrey and his wife, Lindsay, Sharon Hrabe, Susan Grubis, and Sandy Allen. He also leaves his four great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was also the Step-father of the late Nancy (Schmitz, Hrabe) Eunson. He is survived by the children of his late brother Myron and Fredda Swift, Jim, Dana and William Swift of Maine.
He is survived by the children of his late Sister Arlene, Mary, Ruth, Edward, Lucy and Martha.
A memorial service will be held in the First Congregational Church, Andover Rd., Billerica, Interment Fox Hill Cemetery, Billerica, Ma.
