Mr. Kornegay was born of this county, on his late father's farm, near Mt. Olive, on the 18th day of June 1832, and was, therefore, 69 years. 4 months and 13 days old. He married first Miss Lou Borden, sister of Messrs. E. B. and W.H. Borden, and of Mrs. H. M. Dewey and Mrs Dr. J. F. Miller. She preceded him to the grave some twelve years ago, and subsequently he married Miss Annie Snow, of Raleigh, who survives him, but no children were born to him of either marriage.

Mr. Kornegay had been in declining health for several months, and while his friends entertained serious apprehensions on this subject, no sudden nor early termination of his life was anticipated; hence when the news sent forth yesterday morning, as chronicled above his friends found themselves as ill-prepared to recognize the sad truth as they are loth and sorrowful to part with this good man from our midst and miss his kindly face and the warm pressure of his friendly hand henceforth forever.

Passed Away While Attending Protracted Meeting--A Sad Scene.

GOLDSBORO, N. C., October 31.--Mr. W. F. Kornegay, president of the North Carolina Railroad Company and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the State Normal School, of this city, a prominent, wealthy, and greatly beloved citizen, died suddenly this morning in the midst of the service while attending a protracted meeting in St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal church.

Death was instantaneous and without a struggle.
His head sank upon his breast, and his wife, who sat beside hit in the pew, catching him in her arms found him dead. It was a sad scene, and will never be forgotten by all who witnessed the anguish, the grief, and the tears of the wite in that solemn and awful moment.

The body was taken in a carriage to his late home, where it now rests. The funeral will be held from the above church at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon.

Dewey Bros. traces its roots to a company started by W.F. Kornegay of Mount Olive. He had served in the Civil War and in 1874 started W.F. Kornegay Hardware and Agricultural Implements. Charles Dewey worked with him.

In 1884, in Goldsboro, Kornegay decided to sell out to Dewey. It became Dewey Brothers in 1885, and remained in operation until 1996. After his death his wife, Ann Snow, became Charles Francis Deweys's second wife on Feb. 15, 1897.
