Robert Jackson Bruner was born after William Watson Whitfield died in service of the Confederate Army. My G Grandfather, Cebren William Whitfield left Florida at the age of 13 due to the birth of this half brother to come to Texas. We do not know the circumstances of his birth, but have been told he eventually took or was given the name Bruner, his Mother’s maiden name. She later married a man named William Kirkland, and they had a son, James “Jim” Kirkland. Perhaps my DNA will bring some answers. Robert’s birth was in 1864 and his mother was alone without a spouse due to the war, and anything may have happened to cause the birth of this child. The story is yet to be told or discovered. She lived on a farm next to her parents’ farm so it is unlikely she would have taken in a man to whom she was not married.
