Clayton C. Powell, 87, of Lamar, formerly of Russellville, passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2005, at the Johnson Regional Medical Center in Clarksville. He was born March 29, 1918, in Pope County to Jesse H. and Cora Stokes Powell.

He was a construction projects manager and had worked on several large building projects in and around the Russellville area including some of the dorms and the Dean Hall on the campus of Arkansas Tech University. He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 1836 in Russellville.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II.

He was given an accommodation for saving a child from being injured in Russellville as a car was about to roll into oncoming traffic.

He was commissioned by the state of Louisiana as Colonel on the staff of General John J. McKeithen following Hurricane Camille in 1969 while working as an agent for General Adjustment Bureau providing property damage assessments.

He was also a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Russellville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Julia Powell; a son, Jimmy Clayton Powell; a granddaughter, Amy Knoernschild; two brothers F. H. Powell and S. H. Powell; a cousin Glen Powell and a son-in-law, Eddie Fuentes.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law: Shirlye Gayle and Bobby Choat of Granada Hills, California; Linda Fuentes of Woodland Hills, California; and Sharon Frances and Leo Knoernschild of Lamar; a daughter-in-law, Lorene Powell of Vicksburg, Mississippi; his best friend, Reba Lile of Russellville; a sister and brother-in-law, Vanita and Glen Roberts of Santa Maria, California; a sister-in-law, Ruth Ramsey of Russellville; fourteen grandchildren: Mark Schmidt of Tehachapi, California; Michael Shawn Fuentes of Columbus, Ohio; Melissa Grace Plante of Lakeview, California; Kimberly Frances Hiljus of Grants Pass, Oregon; Stephen Powell of Jacksonville, Mississippi; Pam Browder, Tony Powell and Curtis Powell, all of Vicksburg, Mississippi; Eric Powell of Fort Polk, Louisiana; Perry Don Gilbert, Alan Dale Gilbert, Brian Clayton Gilbert and Jeffrey Scott Gilbert, all of Arkansas; and Alisa Kimbrough of Lamar; twenty great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

His funeral was held Saturday, October 8, 2005, at the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Russellville officiated by the Rev. Steve Mosley and the Rev. Herb Swanson. Burial was in the Shiloh-Williamson Cemetery at Russellville under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service.

Active pallbearers were Michael Shawn Fuentes, Perry Don Gilbert, Alan Dale Gilbert, Brian Clayton Gilbert, Jeffrey Scott Gilbert, Eric Powell, Stephen Powell, Tony Powell and Jadd Kimbrough. Honorary pallbearers were all of the remaining grandchildren, Bob and Jeri Rollow and Charles Smith.
