Charles served as a Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-17G "Minnie The Moocher" #42-97893, 360th Bomber Squadron, 303rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

B-17G #42-97893 took off from Molesworth, England on a bombing mission over Magdeburg, Germany. They were attacked and hit by German aircraft causing them to crashed in Schladen, near Homburg, South of Brunswick, Germany during the war.

Charles was "Killed In Action" in this attack.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
