Rev. Gray was graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois in 1871, and later was ordained to Presbyterian ministry on October 12, 1975, by the Presbytery of Fort Dodge (in Iowa). He was the pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Fort Dodge, Iowa (1875-1878). He was then pastor at the Presbyterian Church in Rolfe, Iowa (1881-1883). After that, he was the pastor for two congregations, What Cheer, Iowa, and the Fort Dodge church (1884-1897). Then he served at Ottosen, Iowa (1898-1899), after which he served for a year (1900) at the church in Paton, Iowa. Later he lived in Edina, Missouri.

Lyman's first wife was Mary Caroline Scripps (AKA Mollie Scripps), 1849-1891. They were married on 11 Aug 1871 in Fulton County, Illinois. They had the following children: William Calvin Gray (1872-), James Johnston Gray (1876-), John Lyman Gray (1878-1954), Harley Winter Gray (1880-), and Mary Gray Whiting (1886-1964).
