The son of Patrick Dinan, he married Sophia Feinour and fathered Kate (b. @1856), Thomas J. (b. @1859), and John C. (b. 12/14/60). In 1860, he was a cabinet maker living with his family in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Sophia's status is unknown, but he married Mary M. Coder and fathered Florence Little (b. @1874), Samuel Coder (b. 12/28/76), Emma Novella (b. 07/26/80), Frank Little (b. 11/15/83), Franklin (b. 03/27/91), although his obituary claims he then had twelve children still living. After the war, he lived in Harrisburg before moving to Williamsport, Lycoming County, where he was a charter member of Reno Post No. 64 (later serving as chief of staff with the Pennsylvania G.A.R.) and where he died from cancer at his home.
A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service and attempted a fourth:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-eight and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private with Co. K, 1st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 27, 1861. He is in the company register as "Dianan."
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-nine in Lancaster July 28, 1862, and mustered into federal service there August 11 with Co. A, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry. Although initially selected to be 1st sergeant, he was quickly commissioned a 2nd lieutenant. Wounded in the right knee at the battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863, he honorably discharged to date May 15, 1863, the same as the rest of the company.
3. He then attempted to secure a commission with the Veteran Reserve Corps, but an examining board found him "deficient in knowledge of tactics, regulations, Articles of War, and service" and rejected his application.
4. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-four and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia July 22, 1864, with with Co K, 197th Pennsylvania Infantry, and immediately promoted to the staff as regimental adjutant at the rank of 1st lieutenant. He honorably discharged with his company November 11, 1864.
