Courtney Lee DeBey was born on May 28th, 1935 to John and Julia (Vos) DeBey in Jewell County, Kansas. He graduated from Downs High School in 1953. He met his wife Jeanice McCleery and they were married on May 14th, 1960 at the Christian Church in Esbon, Kansas. They were married for 53 years. They had five children, Connie, Janet, Warren, Paula and Shelly. Courtney worked hard on the farm and was a good provider for his family. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and also taking his family on many vacations. Courtney really enjoyed seeing the mountains throughout the U.S. He enjoyed playing football and baseball in his earlier years. In his later years he enjoyed watching many sporting activities. Courtney displayed spirituality, humbleness and integrity to people he knew well and also to strangers that he had just met. He was well liked in his community and stood firm in his Christian beliefs.
Courtney passed away on February 28th, 2014 at the Osborne County Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, his aunt Grace Vos and his precious 5 year old daughter, Connie Lee.
He is survived by his wife Jeanice and four children. Son, Warren DeBey of Aurora, Colorado, three daughters, Janet Koops and husband Joe of Downs, Kansas, Paula Hartshorn and husband Todd of Peyton, Colorado and Shelly Anderson and husband Aaron of Carthage, Missouri. Four granddaughters, Jamie, Jessica, Jodi, and Jenny, two grandsons, Bryce and Ethan, one great grandchild Jaxon and a brother, Wendell DeBey and wife Barbara of Downs, Kansas.
A celebration of Courtney's life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 3, 2014 at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, Smith Center, KS, with Pastor Lance McDowell officiating. There will be no public visitation and private inurnment will be held in the Downs Cemetery, Downs, KS at a later date. In lieu of flowers and memorials, the family asks that you perform a random act of kindness in memory of Courtney.
