Hervin served as a Technical Sergeant & Radio Operator on B-17F "Lady Susie II" #42-30257, 548th Bomber Squadron, 385th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on July 16, 1942 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Musician and/or teacher of music and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17F #42-30257, while returning from a successful bombing mission over Oschersleben, Germany, was hit by German Anti-Aircraft fire causing the pilot to lose control of his plane.

B-17F #42-30257 then collided with B-17F #42-3316 which caused that B-17 to collide with B-17F #42-30285. All three of the B-17's crashed into the North Sea during the war.

Hervin was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
