FAMILY: William Henry French is the 8th child of John E. French and Sarah Webber. He is one of eleven children.
MARRIAGE: He married Mary Hilt (Dugan) Fryer, a widow and mother of one daughter, Wilberta Fryer. They married in Richmond, Raleigh, West Virginia on November 2, 1865.
SPOUSE: Mary was born on November 10, 1838 in Harpers Ferry, Jefferson, West Virginia and passed away on June 9, 1907 in Chester, Hampden, Massachusetts.
MILITARY CAREER: On June 13, 1859, he enlisted in a Naval Military Service for three years in Boston, Massachusetts. On the enlistment paperwork, he was described as having grey eyes, red hair, fair complexion and being 5'5 1/4" tall. After this service, a Civil War record shows that he enlisted on November 8, 1862 into Company A, Massachusetts 24th Infantry Regiment. He mustered out on January 20, 1866 in Richmond, Virginia. On the 1890 Special Census for Veterans, he states that he enlisted on August 9, 1862 and served until June 29, 1866, a total time served as 3 years 5 months 20 days.
CAREER: Before William embarked on his Military career, he worked as a bootfitter. After the Civil War, he worked as a Grocer.
CHILDREN: Besides being a step-father to Wilberta Fryer, who was born in March, 1862 in West Virginia, William and Mary became parents of six more children. Thomas J French, born about 1866 in Washington DC; Ella Gordon French, born in June, 1868 in Washington DC and died in Avon, Hartford, Connecticut on March 28, 1958; Alice Langdon French, born on December 13, 1869 in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska and died on January 26, 1943 in Connecticut; George Washington French, born on December 31, 1871 in Washington DC and died in Templeton, Worcester, Massachusetts; Clara French, born October 13, 1873 in Washington DC and died on January 26, 1961 in the Los Angeles County of California; Julia Rebecca French, born in the month of September, 1876 in Harpers Ferry, Jefferson, West Virginia.
