Grandma told me she arrived into the Deal family on February 15th, 1914 at her parents’ home, Miles & Iva Deal near Williamsburg in Clermont County, Ohio. She was born during a big snowstorm and her father helped to deliver her at home as the midwife could not make it due to the weather. Grandma grew up with three siblings on a 30 acre farm. She had 2 older sisters - Dorcia (Door – sa) & Marjorie and her brother, Charles was the youngest. Grandma grew up climbing trees, riding bare back on horses, taking their cows to the pasture and swimming in a creek. My grandma attended a one room schoolhouse until the 8th grade with 15 or 20 children at her school.

Grandma grew up liking baseball and basketball. When she was in high school, she played on the basketball team at Williamsburg high school. Grandma graduated from high school in a class size of 28 in 1932. Sometime after graduation, Grandma moved to Cincinnati and lived with her oldest sister in an apartment. She worked at Kroger and there met Ed Peters. Grandma said if it hadn’t been for the Flood of 1937, she might not have been married as during the flood, the Ohio River was up inside the building they worked in. Ed and Edna were both out of work as everything was shut down due to the flood. This is when they started dating and Ed and Edna were married on October 30, 1937.

In October 1943, Grandpa Ed entered the army during WWII. He was sent to Italy in April 1944. This was a hard time on Grandma as they were separated thousands of miles. They exchanged several photographs through the mail to each other. I have a Christmas postcard from Grandpa Ed while in Italy in 1944 written to Grandma. It shows his love for her.
“Wishing my sweet and good wife a happy Christmas and pray the next one finds us in our home together, then it will really be a happy one. I love you more than anything in the world. Here’s a million kisses for the one and only girl in the world. Your Husband forever, Ed”

In 2014, Grandma told me this regarding her husband. “I just liked Ed. I loved him. He was good to me and I hope I was good to him. I use to make ghetta for him all the time. Every morning I made eggs and ghetta for breakfast for him. I use to like it too once in a while, but I never made it after he died.”

Edna bowled until she was 78 years old and had many trophies. At age 87, she was raking leaves in my backyard. It was about this same time, she finally quit mowing her own yard!
