Brother Henry Bonitz

Brother John Henry William Bonitz

Julius was born in Zellerfeld, Hannover (Harz mountains), Germany on 22 December 1841 to Johann Heinrich Wilmhelm Bonitz and Dorothea Louisa Schlitz. He arrived on the bark Vrieland in Baltimore from Bremen. On 22 June 1858 in Oxford, Granville County, NC he married Delia Alice Berndt daughter of Adam and Dorothea Berndt nee Heisschuh of Prussia. They had four children. His wife, Delia was born on 3 January 1852 and died February 21 or 23 in Oxford, NC.

He lived a short time in Baltimore, then DC; he moved to Goldsboro, then to Wilmington, NC where he died 7 February 1891 and was reburied in Goldsboro, NC.

In Goldsboro, he engaged in retail commerce with his brother William, and bought and unsuccessfully operated a brick manufactory. He bought a defunct printing business which he operated extremely well, starting The Goldsboro Messenger during the "late unpleasantness". In spite of being burned out twice, he won many awards as publisher. With his brother, he built the Goldsboro Opera House. He served in the military and was present at the battle of Bentonville. He was active in many civic areas, including the formation of the city's first graded school.

With the encouragement of his brother, William and the urging of Wilmington businessmen, he relocated his newspaper there where he died February 7, 1891.
