The first Advent Christian missionary to Africa, left Boston on 1 Oct 1891. In May 1892, he was joined by his wife, Lillian, and the Rev. Lewis B. Rockwell and his wife, Sarah. Because of severe health problems the Rockwells returned to the United States in 1893. Mr. James "Jim" and Pearl Russell joined the Harveys on 5 Sep 1895. The Harveys sailed for home and furlough on the Steamship Matadi and at Boma on the Congo River the ship exploded (carrying ten tons of gunpowder) and killed the Harveys, 7 Mar 1896.
