US Congressman. Elected as a Republican to represent North Carolina's 10th District and as At-large in the Fourth and Fifth Congresses, he served from 1795 until his death in office. Bryan was born in what is now Jones County, North Carolina. He served in the State House of Commons in 1787 and from 1791 to 1794, after which he resigned to take his seat in the US House. He died in Philadelphia and was originally buried at its Baptist Burial Ground; his remains were subsequently moved to an unknown location. There is a cenotaph in his memory at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.
