The funeral for Lucy E. Stiles will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Christ United Methodist Church with the Rev. Elizabeth Lopez Spence officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville.
Mrs. Stiles, 100, of 416 Ninth Ave. S.E., a former Racine-area farm homemaker, died Thursday (April 10, 1997) at Rochester Healthcare Center.
The daughter of a pioneer family, Lucy E. Tubbs was born Nov. 24, 1896, in Stewartville, grew up there and was a 1915 graduate of Stewartville High School. After completing normal training in Stewartville, she taught in Pleasant Grove District rural school until her marriage. On Feb. 1, 1916, she married William A. Stiles in Stewartville. They farmed in the Bismark, N.D., area until 1933 and then in rural Racine until moving to Rochester in 1946 due to her husband's health. Mr. Stiles died in 1948. Mrs. Stiles continued to live in Rochester until the time of her death. She entered Rochester Healthcare Center 16 months ago. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, was a charter member of the Stewartville Historical Society, and while in Racine was a 4-H club leader and taught Sunday school for a number of years.
Survivors include two sons, Charles of Rochester and Ray of Richfield, Minn.; two daughters, Barbara (Mrs. Clarence) Fredricksen of Stewartville and Elinor Lamb of Rochester; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. A son, a grandchild, three sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and until 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Griffin Funeral Home in Stewartville and an hour before the service Saturday at the church in Rochester.
