The body of David Earl Hubbs, 18, of 812 Jenkins St., was found at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, 27 feet from the car, which was upside down.
Gene Crawshaw, acting Jackson County coroner, said Hubbs may have been dead about eight hours before the wreck was discovered.
Crawshaw said the steep bank hid the wreckage from passing cars. An unidentified truck driver spotted it from his high cab, Crawshaw said.
The wreck was believed caused by. a blowout of the right front tire on Hubb's car.
State Trooper Randall Tolbert said the tire had a slit in it and part of the tread was thrown off.
The pavement showed marks of a wobbling tire, Tolbert said.
He said it appeared a concrete drainage gutter caught the car wheels on the shoulder as Hubbs tried to "ride out" the blowout on the shoulder, throwing the auto down the embankment.
Halfway down, the car started tumbling. It came to rest 150 feet from the spot where it left the highway.
Hubbs had taken his date, Margaret Ridgeway, 17, of 907 N. Marion St., Carbondale, home at 11:45 p.m. Friday. Crawsbaw said Hubbs probably was returning to Murphysboro shortly after midnight.
Hubbs was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl. C. Hubbs, 618 N. 8th St., Murphysboro. He lived with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hubbs.
Hubbs was born Oct. 19, 1943, in St. Louis. He was a farm worker.
He leaves his father; step-mother Mrs. Shirley Hubbs, mother Mrs. Albertine Coleman, brothers, Darren and Carl Duane; sister, Angela Kathleen, and his grandparents.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Crawshaw Funeral Home, Murphysboro, with the Rev. Dean Dace of the Nazarene church officiating. Burial will be in Tower Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
