Greene County no longer has a living veteran of the Civil War today, after the death of George HALSTEAD, 94 years old, at the home of his nephew, George ROLLISON, in the Plummer community, east of Lyons.

Mr. HALSTEAD passed away Friday after a long illness. His death was attributed to complications incident to old age.

Mr. HALSTEAD was born on November 20, 1847, at Checkerville, Ohio, and came to Linton with his parents Elbert and Ru Ann HALSTEAD, while a small boy. He had never married.

Mr. HALSTEAD enlisted at Terre Haute and was assigned to COMPANY E, 43RD REGIMENT INDIANA INFANTRY, one of the most active regiments of the war between the states.


George HALSTEAD, last surviving Civil War veteran, passed away Friday January 16, at the home of a nephew, George ROLLISON, at the age of 94 years.
