U.S. Veteran

Robert Taylor Griggs, age 89, died April 3, 2014 at his home in Sikeston.

Born May 9, 1924 in Wayne County, Tennessee, son of the late Joseph and Jessie L. (Freeman) Griggs.

Mr. Griggs was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Japan following World War II, and had worked as a lineman and warehouse manager at the Board of Municipal Utilities before retiring. He was a devoted member and elder of The Sanctuary United Pentecostal Church of Sikeston, having served in many capacities of the church for 58 years.

On October 17, 1947 he married Olga Casey; she survives of the home.

Other survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Darryl and Teresa Griggs of Sikeston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Vince Schreckenberg of O'Fallon and Janet and Bill Mills of Sikeston; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Rev. Wade Griggs, one sister, Gladys Denton, and one granddaughter, Mallory Griggs.

Visitation will be held Sunday, April 6, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Ponder Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held Monday, April 7, at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Rick Lovall, Pastor of The Sanctuary United Pentecostal Church of Sikeston, and grandson, Josh Mills, Pastor of Youth and Young Adults at Miner Baptist Church.

Burial will follow in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield with full military honors, assisted by son-in-law, Vince Schreckenberg, former Commander of Post 5900.
