He attended Cedar Hill High School.
He served in the U. S. Army during World War II from October 1942 – October 1945. Robert was an MP in the service and met General George Patton twice.
He is survived by four children, Dan Johnston, David Johnston, Don Johnston and Renee Canfield; and one brother, James Johnston.
