Bernhardt Buboltz was born in 1851 in Prussia, Germany, and came to the United States in 1872. He traveled in New York, Indiana, Illinois, Oregon, and Washington working in woolen mills, blacksmithing, and as a farm laborer. He excelled as a carpenter and craftsman.

Bernhardt married Wilhelmena Kroneng in 1879 at Greenfield, Iowa. She was born in 1855 in Drosenden, Province of Pomiran, Germany, and died in 1928.

Bernhardt and Wilhelmena came to Cass County in 1878 to a farm in Massena Township and later moved to their farm in Victoria Township. That farm was later owned by a grandson, Van Buboltz, son of Arthur and Sadie Buboltz.

The Buboltz had seven children: Arthur, Walter, Emma, Frank, Herman, John, and Anna (Mrs. Frank Edwards).

Bernhardt built a home in Massena and retired there. It was once owned by the Merritt Marlowes and later became the funeral home, until the present chapel was built just west of it in the 1970's.

Both Bernhardt and Wilhelmena are buried in the Massena Township Cemetery.
