Susanna was the daughter of George Lutman, Morgan County, West Virginia (1793-1841) and unknown mother; possibly, Serena or Cyrena (unknown last name), whom we know was George Lutman's wife as early as 1836 (when Susanna's brother Isaac was born).

Susanna first married ____ Phillips in Lewis County, Missouri, where daughter Mary Hannah Phillips was born in 1847. Her second husband was Charles F. Stone who died in the Civil War in 1864. She married Joseph Painter in November 1865.

Her tombstone has the name of Stone (the father of her children).
