REMEMBER THE DAYS of SLAVERY

We would like to give recognition to some of our early pioneers whose names may not be familiar to our younger citizens.

Among these early citizens were Mark and Malinda Dicus who lived in the Sand Mountain Community (Dade County, MO) from their marriage in 1882 until their deaths. This beloved old couple, born in slavery, lived on a small farm on the Sand Mountain road. They were called "Uncle Mark" and "Aunt Malinda" by most of the county. Aunt Malinda was blind for many years, but old friends said she could always call them by name when they visited her. She said he "knew their voices".

Mr. Dicus was born Christmas Day 1849, on the "Bidstrup Place" now known as the Albert Scott Place on Highway CC east of town. His parents are Hardin and Susan Montgomery, slaves of Jeff Montgomery, pioneer Presbyterian minister. When Mark was four years old he was sold to a man named Miller who traded him to Ned Dicus. He was taken to the Dicus farm northeast of Greenfield, MO. He belonged to the Dicuses when freedom came. When Mark was sold, his mother was also sold and taken to Arkansas.

Aunt Malinda was born November 4, 1859 on the old Sloan Homestead on Sac River. Her mother was Ellen Sloan and her father was Emanuel Clopton who then belonged to a man named Clopton.

The Dicuses had a small orchard and sold apples in the fall. This was a great time to visit with friends and extend hospitality of their home. He died in 1940 just before his 91st birthday and she was 89 when she died in 1948.

Their son Elmer (Eb) and his son Lester Francis lived with them. Their daughter, Lucinda and her husband Dick Triplett lived a short distance to the west of them and raised their family (Homer, Elizabeth and Roberta).
