She was born June 8, 1924 in Petersburg, IL, the daughter of Herbert "Pat" and Elizabeth Breeden Fairow. She married James H. "Jim" Lyons Sr. On February 17, 1946 in Virginia and he preceded her in death on September 19, 1988.
She is survived by two sons, James H. "Jim" Lyons Jr. (wife, Toni) of Virginia and Rick Lyons of Virginia; two daughters, Mary Jane Rhodes of Springfield and Linda Ashcraft (companion, Bill Tatro) of Springfield; two grandchildren, Bradley James Lyons (wife, Mandy) of Virginia and Keri Ann Lyons (companion, Brandon Crum) of Virginia; two great grandchildren, Emma Grace Lyons and Tucker James Lyons; two sisters, Wanda Bonnett (husband, Jim) of Washington and Betty Curry of Havana; two brothers, Bob Fairow (wife, Lucille) of Oblong and Jesse Fairow (wife, Kay) of Yukiah, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Mike Brackett; a son-in-law, Mike Rhodes; five sisters, Alice Mackey, Bernice Troeger, Mary Lou Fairow, Patty Fairow, and Ida Jockisch; and two brothers, Wayne and Ohrn Fairow.
Doris was a graduate of Petersburg High School and cooked for several years at Rossi's Restaurant in Virginia. She later was employed at Hertzberg-New Method Book Bindery in Jacksonville. She was a devoted member of Virginia Church of Christ and a dedicated St. Louis Cardinal fan. Doris enjoyed flower gardening and was gifted with a "Green Thumb". An exceptional cook, Doris was well-known for her pie-baking expertise.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Monday, March 31, 2014, at the Virginia Church of Christ in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. The family will meet friends from 4:00 to 6:00 pm Sunday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Virginia Church of Christ or Walker Nursing Home Activity Fund.
