Charles Holland Jarrett, Sr., 93, was granted eternal rest on Friday morning, March 28, 2014.
He was born in Dallas, NC on February 7, 1921, son to John Earle Jarrett of Dallas, NC, and Eula Gertrude Charlton Jarrett, who was born in North West, VA.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Edna Earle Charlton Weller.
His mother became widowed in North Carolina, becoming a long-time resident of Norfolk, VA, where Charles grew up after his father died.
He graduated from Maury High School where he was active on the Library Committee and the Photography Club, winning a photo contest The Virginian Pilot sponsored.
He was planning on attending the N.Y. Institute of Photography but soon enlisted in the Army in 1940, marrying Helen Joan Hovan of Swoyerville, PA, and eventually becoming an Aviation Cadet, 999th TSS.
He was later sent to Photography School at Yale University, and served in the Air Force during 1944-45 in New Guinea and the Southern Philippines with the 8th Photo Reconnaissance Squad, 6th Photo Group, 91st Photo Reconnaissance Wing, 5th Air Force. He became a 1st Lt.
Aerial Photography Officer and a Photo Interpretation Officer.
His decorations and citations included the Asiatic-Pacific with 5 Battle Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the American Campaign Medal and the World War Two Victory Medal.
As a civilian he was highly valued for his technical expertise at the Naval Supply Center in Norfolk. He enjoyed a long retirement taking photographs and keeping up with the latest computer technology.
Charles was always ready to help his family any way he could, especially by taking beautiful photos and babysitting. He will be deeply missed.
Charles is survived by his only son, Charles Holland Jarrett, Jr., of Virginia Beach, VA, himself a decorated Viet Nam Purple Heart and Bronze Star veteran; his daughter, Joy Iervolino, and her husband Dr. Robert Iervolino of Virginia Beach, VA; his three grandchildren, Michael, Roberta, and Lisa Iervolino, and Lisa's fiance Bradley Croteau of Virginia Beach, VA.
A visitation service will be held Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel.
A graveside service will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
