Services for Maurice Guy Harmon Jr., 88, of Tyler will be held Thursday, April 3, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sherman Mayfield officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Tyler. The family will receive friends in the chapel from noon until service time.
Mr. Harmon passed away on Monday, March 31, 2014, in Tyler and was born April 11, 1925, in Smith County to Maurice Guy Harmon Sr. and Lena Turman Harmon, who died in childbirth. He was reared by his Aunt Mittie Turman Lewis and husband Henry of Noonday. He was a lifetime resident of the Noonday-Tyler-Whitehouse area, and a 1942 graduate of Tyler High School. He attended Texas A&M University before and after World War II, where he served in the 32nd Infantry Division, 112th Cavalry Regiment and 1st Cavalry Division the South Pacific Theater. He was discharged as staff sergeant. He served in the Bougainville and New Guinea area for three years. In 1953 he went with a group of men from Delta Drilling Co. to drill a well in Spain. Mr. Harmon worked for the Atomic Energy Development & Test Program, Marshall Islands Eniwetok Bikini from 1950 to 1955, 11 years with General Electric Co. in Tyler before his retirement from Kelly-Springfield Tire Co. (Goodyear).
He was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge No. 1233 and charter member of Sharon Shrine Temple. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school and served as a deacon, and was active in men's building projects and mission trips. He served on the board of The Way of Life in Tyler, also Dean Water Supply and, along with his wife, worked many years in the Good Samaritan Outreach Ministry.
Mr. Harmon is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Doris Key Harmon; one son, Kevin Harmon and wife Wendy; three daughters, Dara H. Mayne and fiancé Randy Green, Brenda Harmon and Gaylan Harmon Mitchell and husband Billy; grandsons, Jared Mayne, Joshua Mayne, Grant Mitchell and Nathan Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents; Aunt Mittie and Uncle Henry Lewis; foster siblings, Keith Lewis, Frank Lewis and Mary Jo Lewis McGahey.
The family would like to thank CIMA Hospice and give a heartfelt thank-you to the special caregivers: Kenneth Perkins of Visiting Angels, Guadalupe Morales and Shacamia Goodwyn.
