Born in Hickory, NC to Rev. R. Hugh and Lois Kepley, he earned a B.A. from Lenoir Rhyne University in 1958 and M.Div. from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in 1962.

He married Susan McGee in 1961 in Minneapolis, MN where he was interning at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

In 1962 they moved to Raleigh where he developed a mission congregation that became St. Philip Lutheran Church and served as their Pastor for 36 years until 1998. During this time he guided them through tremendous growth and saw them through many milestones including a move to their current location in North Raleigh. After retirement, he was a supply minister, serving congregations in the eastern part of the state for several years. In 2005 he became part-time interim pastor at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Cary, NC where he served for the next 5 years.

He was a current member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Garner, NC where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He continued to be involved in the community working with many ecumenical organizations in the area.

In addition to his wife of 53 years he is survived by his son R. Joel (Cindy) and daughter Anne M. Travis (Todd).

Grandchildren, Erin, Camryn and Gillian Kepley; Holly, Chloe and Nik Travis.

Brother-in-Law Rev. Fredrick McGee and sister-in-law Paula Rogers along with numerous cousins and extended family.

Service of Celebration was Saturday April 5, 2014, 11:00am at St. Philip Lutheran Church-7304 Falls of Neuse Rd. Raleigh, NC.
