Died - In this village, at the residence of Charles Holt, Mr. David Holt, Senr., aged 73 years.
Mr. Holt was born in New London, Conn., and served his time at the printing business with his brother at that place. It was during his apprenticeship that his brother, (Charles Holt, whose death at an advanced age, at Jersey City, was recently announced), was imprisoned under the alien and sedition laws of John Adams, for publishing matter offensive to the government in his paper the New London Bee. He emigrated early in life to Herkimer county. N.Y., where he edited a newspaper for several years, and received from DeWitt Clinton the appointment of the first judge of the county, which he held for a length of time. A large and highly respectable family of sons and daughters had preceded him in their remove to the west, among them were Charles Holt, editor of the Janesville Gazette, Benjamin Holt of the Rockford Democrat, and David Holt Jr., bookseller, of Madison, and during the last four years he had resided in their midst. Since his fiftieth year he had become a member of the congregational church, and the faith he had so long cherished enabled him at last to enter the Dark Valley with calm courage and serene hope that is a fitting close of a well spent life. Speaking of the death of Mr. Holt, the Madison State Journal says " He was probably the oldest printer in the state, being in his 74th year. He was an ardent lover of the printing business, and up to the very last, felt more at home in a printing office, than any other place. He has devoted over fifty year of his life to the business. He removed to this place about four year ago from the state of New York. He was a devoted christian and died universally respected and lamented by all who knew him. We have venerated him as a father, and. with our entire community, feel sorely afflicted in his death. But what is our loss is his gain."
