DOUG REED, age 79 of Alvin, Texas passed away Monday, March 31, 2014 at Kindred Hospital Clear Lake, Webster, Texas. Doug was born on July 12, 1934 in Manitou, Oklahoma and was a resident of Alvin for over 40 years. He was a member of Southview Baptist Church. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ethel Reed.

Doug is survived by his wife, Earlene Reed, daughters, Karen Cornelius and husband, Frank, Debra Holcomb and husband, Tracy, son, Jon Reed, Sr., sister, Geneva Petticrew, 9 grandchildren, Kayla Wood, Jon Reed, Jr., Brittany Reed, Courtney Reed, Matthew Reed, Christopher Cornelius, Samuel Cornelius, Joshua Holcomb, Hannah Holcomb, 3 great grandchildren, Cambria Wood, Cohen Wood, Adryian Reed, numerous other relatives and friends.

Doug grew up in Roff, Oklahoma and while in school there, he played basketball and baseball. He went to LeTourneau College in Longview, TX where he played basketball also. From there, he went to California Baptist College and it was here that he met his best friend, Earlene Moore. They got married August 19, 1961 in Springville, California. While in California, all three of his children were born. Karen was born in 1963, followed by Jon in 1965 and Debra in 1968.

He became a resident of Alvin, Texas in January of 1971 when he went to work at GAF chemical plant in Texas City. He worked as a maintenance supervisor for many years. He retired in 1997 and then did delivery driving for the Eddie Reynolds Company out of Alvin. In retirement, he got to fulfill a lifelong dream by singing bass in a traveling Southern Gospel quartet - the Gilbert Brothers. He did this for five years.

Doug served his Lord faithfully for many years as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He also drove the church bus at FBC-Alvin on many choir and mission trips and served this church on several pastoral and staff search committees. He also served faithfully at Southview Baptist Church in South Houston.

He was incredibly crazy about his grandchildren as they were about him. Nothing could make him smile more than when any of his grandkids walked into the room and said "Hi PaPaw!"

Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Scott Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Southview Baptist Church, 23003 South Hwy 288, Rosharon, Texas. Interment will follow in Confederate Cemetery, Alvin, Texas.
