He was a cabinet maker by trade, though in 1850 he went to California for three years to mine. Then he returned to Janesville and engaged in the grain and commission business. Later he moved to Memphis, TN, where he became an agent for the North Western Insurance Company. For a time he lived in Kalamazoo, MI, and after that moved to Independence, KS, where he engaged in the hardware business. Finally he traded for a farm near Salina, KS, where he died at 62 years of age.

Josiah and Anna raised two children, Edward Brown Chapin and Mary Elizabeth Chapin.
