409553 Pilot Officer George Jeffreys Kerr was the son of Peter Conway Kerr and Caroline Mary Kerr and hailed from Springvale, Victoria, Australia. The couple had six children. George was a teacher before the war and was well respected by all who came into contact with him.
On the night of 28th/29th January 1944 George's Lancaster aircraft (HK-537)was involved in a collision with Lancaster JA-967 (83 Sqn Pathfinders) whilst his bomber was trying to return to base after a unknown serious problem. Both aircraft fell to earth, the 463 Sqn bomber HK-537 crashing near the village of Mjels, Denmark and the 83 Sqn machine crashing close to the village of Broballe.
No crew members survived. Both crews were buried on the 2nd February 1944 in Aabenraa Cemetery at 7.30am. None of the Danish people were allowed to attend the funerals and the burial was completed in complete silence. George's headstone has been inscribed with the words 'How bright those glorious spirits shine'
Both crews are remembered annually at the crash site in Broballe, Denmark on 29th January by the faithful Danes.
