A tragedy south of Oakland, Iowa, Wednesday afternoon, January 30 took the lives of one of Adams county's finest young couples. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Johnston were returning from Omaha to their farm home seven miles south of Bridgewater where they had lived the past several months. They were involved in an accident with a truck and Mrs. Johnston was killed instantly. Mr. Johnston died in an ambulance en route to a hospital in Council Bluffs.
Leo Lyle Johnston, son of Ethel and Clarence Johnston was born on his father's farm tow and one-fourth miles northeast of Mt. Etna on January 20, 1917 and died on January 30, 1952 at the age of 35 years and 10 days.
Leo was a graduate of the Corning high school and spent his entire life in Adams county. He united with the Brethren church of Mt. Etna when about 16 years of age and remained a member of that church.
Surviving besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Johnston, are three children, Karen, Dale, and Barbara; one brother, Warren Johnston of Bridgwater; two sisters, Mrs. Wilma Bloom of Ames, Iowa, and Mrs. Doris Heaton of Brooks. Also many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Alice Marie Vogel, daughter of Maude and Will Vogel, was born in Lincoln township, Adams county, Iowa on August 16, 1921, and departed this life January 30, 1952, at the age of 30 years, five months, and fourteen days.
She leaves to mourn her passing her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Vogel; her three children, Karen, Dale, and Barbara; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Mosman, Cumberland, Mrs. Wilma Schafer, Mt. Etna, Mrs. Beulah Bissell, Corning; and six brothers, Earl of Mt. Etna, Russell, Don, and Ray all of Corning, Glen of Lenox, Ralph of Melbela, Nebraska. She is also survived by many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Alice and Leo were united in marriage on August 16, 1941 at Maryville, Missouri. To this union were born three children, Karen aged eight; Dale Eugene aged six, and Barbara Ellen, five and one-half months old.
This couples spent their married life farming in the Lincoln Center and Mt. Etna communities with the exception of two years when he worked in Corning with Manford Johnston in an auto body parts shop.
Both attended the Lincoln Center church and were active in the work of the church there before moving from the community last spring. Alice united with the church of her husband's faith, the Brethren Church of Mt. Etna, two years ago last December.
All who knew this fine couple are saddened by their untimely passing, but will remember them as a good husband and wife, a kind father and mother, and helpful neighbors of pleasant disposition.
Services were conducted at the Lincoln Center Methodist Church last Saturday afternoon by the pastor, Rev. K. J. Bressler, assisted by Rev. Oliver Davison, former pastor at Mt. Etna. Over 600 people were present.
The music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Elmer West and three children: Emma, Alvis, and Lee, with Mrs. Vern Roberts at the piano. Songs sung were "Good Night and Good Morning", "Sometime We'll Understand", and "Beyond the Sunset."
Flower bearers were Mrs. Oma Evans, Mrs. Velma Lovig, Mrs. Anna Kingery, and Mrs. Dorpha Kingery.
Pall bearers for Mr. Johnston were six cousins: Manburn Johnston, Manford Johnston, Marvin Johnston, Millard Johnston, Charles Johnston, and David Beck.
Pall bearers for Mrs. Johnston were her six brothers: Russell, Don, Ralph, Glen, Earl, and Ray.
Interment was in Mt. Etna Cemetery.
