Boyd A. Cuckler, 88, died March 29, 2014, at Elm Grove Estates, Hutchinson. He was born April 20, 1925, in Bertrand, Neb., the son of William J. and Hattie E. Rutan Cuckler.

Boyd graduated from Chadron High School, Chadron, Neb., in 1943. He was then drafted on Nov. 16, 1944, into the United States Army during WWII and achieved the rank of Master Sergeant in just a year and a half. He was stationed in Nurnberg, Germany, during this time. Boyd earned the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on August 30, 1946. Boyd was a farmer and rancher before joining the Federal Aviation Administration. He retired from the FAA at Goodland, Kan., in 1980. Boyd had a pilot's license and owned his own plane. He was a resident of Hutchinson since the 80's. He and Shirley loved to travel and spent winters in Mission, Texas, where he took up golf, coming back to Hutchinson to be with family in the summer. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Elks Lodge #453, and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, the V.F.W. Bob Campell Post #1361, and the Civil Air Patrol. In Oct. of 2012, he was privileged to be a part of the Kansas Honor Flight to the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.

On Sept. 18, 1949, he married Shirley J. Dobbins in Chadron, Neb. He is survived by his wife of 64 years; two daughters, Deborah Siebert and husband Richard, and Cheryl Odell and husband Conrad, all of Hutchinson; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Justin Whitt and his children, Ashlyn, Jocelyn and Brooklyn, all of Hutchinson, Danae Wallace and husband Rob, and their children, Rylee and Reis of McPherson, Shawn Dressman and his children, Brayden and Ava, all of Hutchinson. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will greet friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson. Graveside service to follow at 3:30 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson, with Rev. Eric Zacharias presiding. Military honors will be conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until service Wednesday at the mortuary. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Homecare of Reno County, Cancer Council of Reno County, or the Kansas Honor Flight, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N Main, Hutchinson KS 67501.
