Agnes Backhaus dies at hospital
Mrs. Agnes J. Backhaus, 80, of route 3, Decatur, one-half mile north of Pleasant Mills on 101, widow of Arnold Backhaus, died at 5:15 p.m. Monday at the Adams county memorial hospital, where she had been a patient one day. She had been in failing health 12 years
Mrs. Backhaus, a member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Chattanooga, O., and the Ladies Aid of the church, was a school teacher in Defiance and Henry counties for a number of years, and was a member of the St. Mary’s Home Economics Club.
Born in Ridgeville township, Henry county, O., on Feb. 21, 1893, she was a daughter of Charles and Doris Joost-Schroeder, and was married on Nov. 24, 1920, to Arnold Backhaus, who died on Feb. 29, 1940. She was the last of her family of 12 and had resided in Adams county the past 34 years.
Surviving are two sons, Charles and Lester, of route 3, Decatur; one daughter, Mrs. Alvin (Marian) Fennig of Galesburg, Ill.,; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Zwick funeral home and at 3 p.m. (Ohio time) at the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Ridgeville Corners, O., with Rev. Ralph Hershberger officiating at the Decatur service and Rev. Gerald Elsholz at the Ohio service. Burial will be in the St. Peter Lutheran cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. tonight and at the church one hour prior to the Ridgeville Corners service.
