Ann Kay Sims Rath Dugan was born in West Plains, MO. in 1940, the only child of Corbett E. Sims and Opal Ann Miller. She grew up in West Plains, graduating from high school in 1958. In 1958, she studied Fashion Design at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. She transferred to the University of Missouri at Columbia, receiving her BA in 1962. She married Roger Laurence Brady Rath, of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, in 1965 in West Plains. Her maid of honor was Julia Adamson of St. Louis, Missouri, who received her Masters in Comparative Lit. from Washington University and was a close family friend. Roger received his Masters from the University of Iowa Writer's Workshop. He was a writer and taught at Johnson State College. Ann and Roger welcomed their only child, Jessica Miller Rath in 1969. Ann and Roger separated and divorced prior to 1976. On May 1, 1980, Roger died in an automobile accident in Vermont. In 1977, Ann returned to Washington University in St. Louis, receiving an MFA in printmaking and an MA in art therapy from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO. While at Washington University, she met Bill Dugan, a North Carolina native and a printmaker/sculptor. Ann and Bill married, moving to West Plains where they created Studio 410. They were a very busy couple, active in various art therapies in helping children, etc. and in traveling. Ann had to retire in 1989 due to the progression of her Parkinson's disease. Her daughter, Jessica Miller Rath, married Joe Fairbrother and they have a daughter, Emma Ann. Thankfully, Ann got to see her granddaughter. We miss and love Ann Kay Sims beyond the expression of words. She was lots of fun besides being an extremely talented, smart, and beautiful woman.
