Cornelia was the sixth of twelve children born to David Smith and Jean More Smith. She was raised at Roxbury where her father was a prominent farmer and the first to sell butter to the New York City market. Cornelia married to Ezekial Preston on 22 May 1833 at Roxbury. They made their home at Roxbury where her husband was the owner and operator of a farm. Cornelia and Ezekial were the parents of four children; Eliza Maria Preston, Otis Marshall Preston, Hamilton Smith Preston, and Jonas More Preston.
