James H. McEvoy, age 89 years, died Sunday, March 30, 2014 in Bay Medical Care Facility. He was born October 24, 1924 to the late Henry L. and Ellen G. (Sasse) McEvoy in Butler, Pennsylvania. Moving to Michigan as a young man, he studied pre-law at Ferris State College and served the Big Rapids community as a policeman. While in Big Rapids he founded the Junior Police and the Boys Club. He was also instrumental in founding the Boys & Girls Club in Bay City. Jim who proudly served his country in the U S Army during World War II and the Korean War was honorably discharged as a Second Lieutenant. For over 24 years, he owned his own private investigation firm, McEvoy Detective Agency and retired in 1976. Jim was a member of the Church of St. Boniface, the DAV, and life-long member of the National Rifle Association. For many years he volunteered his time as Umpire in Chief for the Northeast Little League. In his spare time, he enjoyed big game hunting and shot the 13th largest moose in the world. His favorite times were spent with family and his grandchildren who would make him "light up" when they came to visit.

On December 28, 1950 he married the former Joan Hurdle in Big Rapids who survives him along with six children: James H. (Kathy) McEvoy II, Dawn Ann Klida, Julia Marie (Rock) Denham, Michael Edward (Susan) McEvoy, Patrick Henry (Renee) McEvoy, Daniel Paul (Linda) McEvoy; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Henry (Rosie) McEvoy; two sisters: Charlotte Halasinski, Virginia Korkoske; several nieces and nephews; and his sister-in-law: Ruth McEvoy.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, John and Harry McEvoy; his son-in-law: Len Klida; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Ed and Lucille Hurdle; and two brothers-in-law: Joe Halasinski and Earl Gonyaw.

Jim's family would like to thank the staff of 1-W at Bay Medical Care Facility for their many kindnesses and special care of "The Colonel".

The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Friday, April 4, 2014 at 11:00 am in the Church of St. Boniface. Jim will lie in state in church Friday after 10:00 am. Rev. William J. Gruden will preside and interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery with military rites under the auspices of the Bay County Veterans Council. Memorial contributions may be designated for The Wounded Warriors Project or Wishes of the Family. Visiting hours with the family will be Thursday from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm with the Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 pm in the W. A. Trahan Funeral Chapel. For online condolences: www.trahanfc.com
